Friday, April 7 at 6:30pm - Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, reception begins at 5:30pm
We welcome Judith Joy Ross to co-present the 2023 Medium Festival of Photography Keynote Lecture with curator Joshua Chuang. With a distinguished and celebrated career of more than fifty years as one of the most esteemed portrait photographers working in the world today, Ms. Ross’ unique portraiture is being marked with a major retrospective exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art after a tour through museums in Europe. Her work, made exclusively with an 8”x10” view camera, celebrates everyday Americans through a compassionate approach to the grand tradition of portraiture. The exhibition is accompanied by an exhibition catalog published by Aperture, with an essay by curator Joshua Chuang which surveys Ross’ entire career.
Judith Joy Ross will be in conversation with curator, writer and editor Joshua Chuang in an exploration of her career, major series and the themes of her compelling work.
This is a FREE event. Registration is required to reserve your spot and receive event reminders.
Financial Support for the Keynote Lecture is provided by the City of San Diego
About Judith Joy Ross
Judith Joy Ross has forged her own unique and comprehensive body of contemporary portraits, with a lyric eloquence, economy and insight, honestly revealing the complexity of her many subjects. Her portraits have never easily been encompassed by a single or comfortable category, but are still firmly rooted in and informed by the best traditions of 20th century portraiture in photography. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, she studied at Moore College of Art, then at Chicago’s Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology with Aaron Siskind. Her early recognition included from the Museum of Modern Art (1985), a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1986 and numerous gallery shows. In recent years her works have found a wider audience and have been featured at many significant institutions in Europe and the United States. Her works are held in the collections of most major museums in the US.
