Pineland/Hollywood Film Screening and Talkback

with Debi Cornwall and Michael Trigilio

Saturday, April 8 at 11am - Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego

At a traffic stop, distinguishing reality from fantasy becomes the difference between life and death. Using fair-use clips from almost 200 Hollywood films, Pineland/Hollywood challenges viewers to reassess how we consume fictionalized stories of real state violence.

The screening of Pineland/Hollywood will be followed by a talkback between Debi Cornwall and Michael Trigilio. After the event Debi will sign copies of Necessary Fictions, published by Radius Books in 2020.

This is a FREE event. Registration is required to reserve your spot and receive event reminders.

Financial Support for the screening of pineland/hollywood is provided by the City of San Diego

About Debi Cornwall

Debi Cornwall is a conceptual documentary artist and filmmaker who returned to visual expression after a 12-year career as a civil-rights lawyer. Marrying dark humor with structural critique, she uses still and moving images along with testimony and archival material to examine the staging and performance of American power.

Her two photography books, Welcome to Camp America: Inside Guantánamo Bay and Necessary Fictions, both with Radius Books (2017 and 2020), explore “state-created realities,” from the offshore War-on-Terror prison and its global diaspora to the domestic military sites hosting immersive, realistic wargames. She developed two case studies from Necessary Fictions into short found-footage films, Pineland/Hollywood (2021) and Jade Helm (2022), both screening at film festivals internationally.

Debi is currently one of eight mid-career photographers shortlisted for the biennial Swiss prize, the Prix Élysée, and is a 2023 finalist for the Aesthetica Art Prize. Her work is held in public collections around the world, and has been profiled in publications as diverse as Art in America, European Photography Magazine, National Geographic, the New York Times Magazine, and the Los Angeles Review of Books.

In recent years, his work has explored the intersection of science-fiction, rage, and empathy, especially with regards to state-violence and revolutionary world-building.

His work in film, sound, performance, and tactical-media have been exhibited at the Whitney Biennial, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the LA County Museum of Art, and the Contemporary Museum in Baltimore among others.
